BRET HARTE, Stanislaus County — Modesto’s Utilities Department reported in March 2026 that work continued on replacing deteriorating water mains serving Bret Harte and Parklawn, two unincorporated neighborhoods south of the city.

The city’s public utilities update says the project will replace aging water lines, valves and fire hydrants to improve water pressure and reliability. The project is being coordinated with Stanislaus County’s street reconstruction to limit repeated digging, an arrangement intended to save disruption by bringing street and water-system work together.

The combined program covers two neighborhoods, so a total stated for both areas should not automatically be reported as an amount spent only in Bret Harte. The city’s March report establishes the project was advancing then but does not verify whether all connections are complete in November or when a particular household will face a shutoff.

What residents should know

Water customers should follow utility notices for planned service interruptions, prepare safe drinking water if a confirmed outage is announced and report unplanned main breaks through the city’s utility contact channels. A new hydrant or line does not necessarily change a household’s existing service terms.
