BRET HARTE, Stanislaus County — An infrastructure rebuilding program is under construction in the unincorporated Bret Harte neighborhood south of Modesto, where many streets have long lacked a complete system of curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
Stanislaus County’s state environmental filing outlines pavement reconstruction, accessible curb ramps, new or rebuilt sidewalks, storm-drain improvements, crosswalks, signs and lighting. County leaders and residents marked a construction groundbreaking in January 2026. The project is focused on an area that has experienced standing water and difficult walking conditions, especially during wet weather.
The county’s public project record describes a scope of work, while the January event confirms the start of construction activity; neither source establishes that every block is finished today. Temporary access, driveway work and drainage installation may occur at different times, and funding across the wider south Modesto program is divided among separate projects.
What residents should know
Residents can document blocked driveways, unsafe crossing conditions or drainage problems and send precise street locations to the county’s Public Works office. Drivers should obey temporary controls and avoid parking in active construction areas.
